Chertsey's Beginnings

Chertsey was originally an island, surrounded by the Thames with its tributary systems and undrained marshland.

In 666AD Chertsey Abbey, a Benedictine monastery, was founded by Erkenwald. The Abbey survived two pillaging attacks by Vikings in the 9th century, to become the wealthiest house in Surrey. The Abbey had recovered by the time of the Doomsday Book and the records also show that by the Middle Ages the Abbey held over 50,000 acres of lands in Thorpe, Egham, Weybridge and elsewhere. It was frequently visited by the Plantaganet Kings, and in 1471 Henry VI was buried there after his murder during the Wars of the Roses. The Abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII.

Chertsey developed around the monastery and was carefully planned, overseen by the monks, to become the trade centre of the area. The towns economy was based on agriculture and market gardening. Tile and brick making was an important industry in the area from the 13th to 20th centuries and some examples of these tiles can be seen at the Chertsey Museum. In the early 18th Century a number of fine buildings were built for gentry wanting to live away from London that can be still seen today.

The expansion of the town was largely due to the opening of the railway station in 1848. Chertsey's historic centre has remained largely unchanged until recent years when the continuing redevelopment scheme for Chertsey is making many changes and improvements.
